Wild Week in Wales

Friday 15th August to Thursday 21st August 2008

A week of living close to each other and capturing the meaning of GreenSpirit: living in a loving consciousness of the interconnected world.

The Wild Week takes place at Cae Mabon in Snowdonia. Cae Mabon is set in natural woodland by a rushing river, near a deep lake, at the foot of high mountains and almost within sight of the sea. A family of beautiful, natural, earthy structures provide appealing spaces for groups to meet, retreat, work and play.

For more information see the Cae Mabon website at www.caemabon.co.uk or contact Hilary Norton t: 020 8470 3365 e: hapn(at)greenspirit.org.uk or Chris and Isabel Clarke t: 02380 552546 e: cclarke(at)scispirit.com.

Accommodation is basic (but interesting!) and we cook our meals together. (Final cost for accommodation and food will be worked out later but should not be more than £150 each).

Originally Blessed

I am a collaborator in a book called Originally Blessed that the Green Spirit community may be interested in.

This publication brings together over 65 writers, artists, composers and activists to celebrate and respond to Matthew Fox's Original Blessing, which was first published 25 years ago. The book features essays, poetry, interviews, paintings, collages, sculptures, photgraphs, music, meditations... and a recipe! At about 350 pages, including a 26-page full color art section, Originally Blessed is a wonderful collection of thought-provoking and heart-provoking works. Highly recommended. Any proceeds will be going to a charity of Matthew Fox's choosing. If you are interested order now because the first limited edition print run is about to begin and the window closes July 5th!

Things are Hotting UP! Cooling DOWN! In/conveniently Confusing!

Whatever the Truth of it, Tree planting can be a balancing action for our beautiful World, particularly in  England, one of the least forested countries in Europe.

At Epona, 24 acres of beautiful land on the edge of Dartmoor, near Chagford, Devon we are both planting wood and enabling others to be involved.

“the best time to plant a tree is ten years ago, but if you didn’t do that…..today will do!”

In relation to Carbon, Scientists have been warning that the average British person’s carbon footprint is eleven tonnes of CO2 a year and that this must be reduced to 2.5 if we are to stand a chance of avoiding runaway climate change. The most up to date studies suggest that the reduction needs to be even greater than that.

Britain is one of the least forested countries in Europe and as trees absorb and lock up carbon as they grow, these are two good reasons to plant them. As the carbon affecting us now is that emitted fifteen years ago, it is essential that any idea of offset (or sequestration as it is often called) go hand in hand with other carbon reduction techniques.

Together lets start creating a more positive legacy for our children!

Cost £10 per tree - this includes the trees themselves, tree guards and mulch, planting and on going care/maintenance – (in the first three years trees gain from being supported to be weed free through mulching and clearing. Some organisations choose to spot spray around the trees but we would prefer not to)

Less is More: Is it Really Possible to Live Better by Consuming Less?

Bristol Schumacher Conference 2008

Sat 11 Oct 08, 10am-5pm, Bristol Council House, College Green

Jonathon Porritt Programme Director & Chair

Bill McKibben: author, educator & “deep economist” “350 ppm CO2 & The Quest for Human Satisfaction”

Key Presenters:

Eugenie Harvey (We Are What We Do), Matt Harvey (poet), Simon Hooton (SWRDA), Rob Hopkins (Transition Towns), John Naish (“Enough, Breaking Free from the World of More”), Ann Pettifor (Advocacy International), Andrew Simms (NEF) and Solitaire Townsend (Futerra)

This year, we are marking the 30th Anniversary of Fritz Schumacher’s death, and we are doing things a little differently. Not so much a ‘line-up of Lecturers’ as a great sharing of new ideas from passionate advocates for change, outspoken controversialists and a dozen leading practitioners – the people making change happen on the ground now. Our theme (“Less is More”) goes right to the heart of today’s debates about climate change, worsening injustice, peak oil, the credit crunch, food security, health inequalities, resource wars and so on. Growing numbers of people now recognise that far more radical change is urgently needed – so come and spend the day with the movers and shakers, the doers and the transformers, in what surely represents the most hopeful and dynamic social movement in the UK today.

Organic Lunch by Barny Haughton, Bristol’s chef extraordinaire. Sponsors: Forum for the Future, Rathbone Greenbank Investments, SWRDA, Towry Law and Triodos Bank.  Costs (lunch not included): £35 standard, £25 concessions & Schumacher Society members and £15 students. For further info or to book a ticket The Schumacher Society, Create Centre, Smeaton Rd, Bristol, BS1 6XN. Tel: 0117 903 1081 admin@schumacher.org.uk www.schumacher.org.uk
