About Us – Vision, People, History and Structure

IT IS EXPECTED THAT THIS WILL BE UPDATED WITH THE NEW VISION STATEMENT

GreenSpirit is a network of people who celebrate the human spirit in the context of our place in the natural world and Earth’s own evolutionary journey. Our radical vision brings together the rigour of science, the creativity of artistic expression, the passion of social action and the wisdom of spiritual traditions of all ages. Attracting those of many faith traditions, we are a body of people who believe that human life has both an ecological and a spiritual dimension. Together we:

* celebrate all existence as deeply connected and sacred

* understand humanity as integral to the planetary landscape rather than its distinguishing feature

* find inspiration in the traditions of Earth-based peoples and Celtic spirituality

* are exploring the unfolding story of the Universe and promote common ground between people in the context of this vision

* seek to redress the balance of masculine and feminine and befriend darkness as well as light

* create ceremonies and celebrations which connect us more consciously with the cycle and seasons of the Earth

* seek a more just, sustainable and peaceful way of life in harmony with the Earth

GreenSpirit is a network of people who embrace a worldwide view of Nature-based spirituality and work towards supporting each other in grounding this vision. Many of our members have found that connecting with like minded people rejuvenates and sustains them in their passions for self-sufficiency, permaculture, eco-justice, promoting and campaigning for green awareness and more through a variety of activities. Some members with religious backgrounds also find GreenSpirit’s focus helps them understand their own tradition more deeply. Others come from non-religious backgrounds, who seek to connect with the Earth and all beings.

GreenSpirit has early connections with St James’s Church, Piccadilly, London. In the late 80s it grew out of the inclusive and progressive teachings of the contemporary activist and mystic Matthew Fox. First calling itself the Association for Creation Spirituality, the charity changed its name to GreenSpirit in 1997 to further highlight its essential Nature-centred focus, relevance to contemporary life and wisdom, and alignment with current environmental awareness.

Today, GreenSpirit is also inspired by trailblazing figures from many important fields, including the cosmologist Brian Swimme, Buddhist teacher and green activist Joanna Macy, and Christian ‘geologian’ (as he preferred to call himself) Thomas Berry, who promoted a heartfelt call to humanity to join in the Great Work needed for our times to protect our sacred Earth.
