Gaia Alchemy

A talk by Dr. Stephan Harding

11:00am – 12:30pm

About 400 years ago, during the scientific revolution, science and soul were drastically separated, propelling humanity into four centuries of scientific exploration based on empiricism and rationality. Although the huge development of science has given us many benefits, its predominance has made us into detached observers fundamentally disconnected from each other and from nature. And yet, in our own time, science has given us detailed knowledge about the evolution of our Earth – Gaia – whilst depth psychology in the guise of alchemy provides us with profound insights about the workings of the human psyche. Dr. Stephan Harding explains how Gaia Alchemy integrates the sciences of the Earth with alchemical approaches to the psyche so we can live harmoniously within the limits of our planet.

Dr. Stephan Harding is Deep Ecology Research Fellow and Senior Lecturer in Holistic Science at Schumacher College, which he helped to found along with Satish Kumar and others in 1990. He holds a doctorate from Oxford University in behavioural ecology and is the author of Animate Earth: Science, Intuition and Gaia (Green Books 2009), and also of Gaia Alchemy (Bear and Co. 2021).

Café Conversations

1:30pm – 2:30pm

This Cafe is a “place” to explore questions that matter. We will have a few different topics for discussion and use the Zoom Break Out rooms to allow several different conversations to go on at the same time. Someone may take notes, you’ll be able to drop in and out of conversations, listening, contributing, and hopefully gaining a sense of how themes connect. In the final 15/20 minutes, we will come back together and “harvest” some ideas, hopefully recording them in a way that informs and inspires us.
