In this book, Peter Wohl explores eco-spirituality and details his personal spiritual journey. He has facilitated eco-spiritual workshops and Nature trips for over 20 years, and he lives in Turtle Marsh Nature Sanctuary, Maine, located in the north-east corner of the USA. All of his experience is reflected in the book through grounded observations about Nature, our connection with it, and the green spiritual journey.
What I like about the book is that it is so in tune with GreenSpirit. Many writers and poets who are mentioned in the book, such as Gerard Manly Hopkins, Joanna Macy and Rachel Carson, will be familiar to GreenSpirit readers. The author draws on Deep Ecology, Ecopsychology, indigenous spirituality and Zen Buddhism and also writes about his personal life journey, all of which help to provide a backdrop to his emphasis on how we can be healed through our connection with Nature.
This author’s deep thinking and deep spiritual journey are reflected throughout the book. The breadth of his spiritual and personal experiences is mirrored in the breadth of subjects covered in the book such as anthropocentricism, co-creation and presence. And difficult subjects are not avoided such as a discussion about the dilemma of not killing.
I like the author’s commentary on opening our minds to the unknown or mystical. Here is one of my favourite quotes which is from page 24:
When we are able to restore our wild mind and our state of not knowing, we open the pathway to connection with Mother Earth and all her children. This does not rely on any established set of beliefs. It simply requires that we suspend our disbelief in a way that allows our experiences, our intuitions, and our heartfelt connections to inform us.
Finally, it is good – in fact essential – that the author walks his talk with his low impact lifestyle, his critique of the western consumerist lifestyle and his support of direct action. It is heart-warming to read a book from someone who is so deeply connected with the Earth and living a life aligned with it, and I came away encouraged and enthused.
