Famous Last Words: Dr. Jane Goodall is a deeply personal, intimate interview-style documentary that is both a tribute and a farewell from one of the most influential scientists and humanitarians of the modern era. The documentary was filmed before Jane passed away, aged 91, in October 2025, but it was only ever going to be released after she passed. Maybe this helped Jane to talk more freely and openly about her life and work.

Jane talked about her remarkable life: her early passion for animals, her discovery and study of chimpanzees in Tanzania, breaking barriers as a woman in science, her life partnerships, and her deep concern about the future of the planet. She also mentioned her work with “Roots and Shoots”  which nurtures young minds and hands to build a sustainable future through community-led conservation actions.

It was so interesting to hear her belief that consciousness is outside and beyond the individual, and that there is an afterlife. I am sure that many others share this belief, which helps to create a meaningful life.

Perhaps the best part is the closing minutes. Here, the interviewer leaves the room, and Jane addresses the camera directly – a moment designed to feel like her ‘last words’ to humanity. She delivers a heartfelt plea about the importance of every individual’s role in protecting the Earth, holding on to hope, and living meaningfully, even as the world faces an ecological crisis and increasing social turmoil.

I found the documentary both inspirational and heart-warming. And I was very encouraged to hear her talk openly about her spiritual approach to life. Jane Goodall will be missed by so many, but her life and spirit live on with us all, encouraging us to take care of our precious planet.

At the time of writing, this documentary is on Netflix.
